Milky Way Over Trona Pinnacles

We just got back from a three day trip to the California desert. Here is a preliminary edit done on my cellphone with Snapseed.

The Trona Pinnacles are basalt tufas on what was once a vast body of water thousands of years ago. They are next to Searles Dry Lake, which was the source of most if the world's borax. The 20 Mule Teams started their journey near here.

The Point Mugu Air Show (cross posted from the photography group).

Please take a few moments to check out my photos from the Point Mugu Air Show this past weekend. This was the first time the Navy held the show since the beginning of the Pandemic.

Point Mugu Air Show

The Point Mugu Naval Air Station held their first air show since the start of the pandemic this past weekend. I was fortunate to grab a prime spot for photographing the action. Both the Air Force Thunderbirds and the Navy Blue Angels were performing. For those interested in technical stuff, I was using my Canon EOS R5 with an RF 100-500mm lens, and processed the photos with DXO Pure Raw, Adobe Camera Raw, and Topaz PhotoAI. I used the electronic shutter and was firing off at 20 frames per second. It rained off and on and the skies were dingy most of the day.

All three of these choppers were completely staffed by women in honor of National Womens Month.

This was a Navy PBJ. The Army Air Force version was known as the Mitchell Bomber. These were the aircraft used by Jimmy Doolittle for the surprise raid on Tokyo in 1942. There had never before been a launch of a bomber from an aircraft carrier. The pilots trained in secret at Los Alamitos Naval Air Station in Los Angeles. The carrier Hornet snuck up on Japan, and launched the bombers for a one way raid. The plan was for the pilots to crash or land in China to be recovered by Chinese forces. Some of them made it, others didn't.

This is my favorite shot of the day.

I went viral today!

Channel 7 in Los Angeles, (my old TV station), posted my photo of the Hollywood Sign with the snow covered mountains in Los Angeles. At last count it has seventy thousand hits and sixteen thousand shares. Of course, I forgot to put my name on it.

As I often do, I grabbed a camera while I was leaving to walk the dog. This was the view about four blocks from home.

Aww thanks so much Duppers!

I have been really lazy about uploading my latest pics. I have to put aside a whole day to bring it up to date.

About Grumpy Old Guy

Thank you Democratic Underground for keeping me sane for the last four years. I think I was probably the longest lurker here. I started following DU during the Dubya administration. I was first attracted to the "Top Ten Conservative Idiots of the Week." I've been following along ever since. I always felt guilty for not participating, but refrained from doing so because I already spend way too much time online. However, after recent events, I just can't sit back any longer. I had to log on and thank you folks for all that you do. I'm a retired TV newscast director with forty years experience and more than eighteen thousand broadcasts under my belt, most of them live. I now travel the country (when I can) shooting landscape, astro and wildlife photography. You can see some of my photos at Ross-Kestin.Pixels.com or on Instagram at @oldguywithacamera. Thanks again!
