Are Omicron cases in South Africa Peaking?
A few people seem to think the worst may be coming to an end:
Nearly three weeks after the Omicron variant was first identified by South African scientists, the COVID-19 mutation has whipped across the world, with infections in at least 63 countries. But in South Africa itself, the cases seem to be nearing their peak, and could already be headed for decline.
Cases of Omicron in Guateng, South Africas most populous province and home to its biggest city, Johannesburg, rose slightly from a seven-day daily average of 9,645 last Thursday, to 10,131 on Sunday. At the same time, the positivity rate of those being tested and the number of hospitalizations have both been falling. Data from the countrys National Institute for Communicable Diseases show positivity rates dropping from 30% to around 15% between Thursday and Saturday, while the number of new hospitalizations fell from 207 to 64 over the same period.
The positivity rate in South Africa has been flattening and now declined for the past two days, Scott Gottlieb, a senior fellow for the American Enterprise Institute and former FDA commissioner, tweeted on Sunday.
This and other COVID data suggest that the infections from the COVID-19 mutation could peak during the next week before beginning to drop, says Pieter Streicher, a coronavirus analyst at the University of Johannesburg, who compared the wave of infections with case numbers from the Delta strain. The peak is now likely to end up in the window specified, he tweeted, marking out a period between last Friday, Dec. 10, and next Monday, Dec. 20.

People over 65 make up 3/4 of the Covid death toll.
As the coronavirus pandemic approaches the end of a second year, the United States stands on the cusp of surpassing 800,000 deaths from the virus, and no group has suffered more than older Americans. All along, older people have been known to be more vulnerable, but the scale of loss is only now coming into full view.
Seventy-five percent of people who have died of the virus in the United States or about 600,000 of the nearly 800,000 who have perished so far have been 65 or older. One in 100 older Americans has died from the virus. For people younger than 65, that ratio is closer to 1 in 1,400.
The heightened risk for older people has dominated life for many, partly as friends and family try to protect them. You get kind of forgotten, said Pat Hayashi, 65, of San Francisco. In the pandemic, the isolation and the loneliness got worse. We lost our freedom and we lost our services.

About that Italian villa with the Caravaggio ceiling that's listed
for a cool 530 million or so. When I put up the original story I had no idea who actually owned it.
It turns out that the owner is the American widow of an Italian prince: The ex - Mrs. Rita Jenrette! Wow!

Youtube TV.
Many years ago my wife got so mad at the cable company we cut the cord. We have a ten year old tv and I picked up a roku streaming device. So we got some free stuff and we subscribed to Acorn and Prime. I wanted TCM and news channels so eventually we picked up sling tv. I'm pretty loathe to change anything but years ago I remember Clark Howard saying youtube tv was the best streaming deal. Roku and youtube were having a fight for the last six months but I read a couple of days ago it was settled, so I said to Sarah: Let's switch!
So as of last night we have youtube tv. Sarah wanted HBO for some reason, so I cancelled prime and acorn.
So far I'm really impressed
20 bucks more than sling for all the networks plus a ton of sports channels plus all the stuff I watched on sling plus a lot of other stuff. 65 a month. Not the deal Clark Howard was pushing years ago but not too bad. The stuff we cancelled will cover the costs of HBO max plus about 5 HBO channels. Apparently Sarah will have me watching Bill Maher 24/7 for the next few months.
Being a technophobe, I had a problem getting the local channels to work. I was worried the tv was too old. But I thought about it overnight and thought: Maybe the problem was with the Roku. Sure enough, I restarted the Roku and that was all that I needed to pick up the local network channels.
So now we have tv channels up the wazoo for not much more than we were paying and still no cable company to hassle us. Youtube tv still seems like an ok deal.

Is Long Covid Even Real?
The answer is there is probably something out there, but at this point it's kind of hard to say what.
