Pope Francis says Ukraine war "perhaps somehow either provoked or not prevented"

Source: CBS News

Pope Francis has told a group of European Jesuit news editors that the war in Ukraine was "perhaps somehow either provoked or not prevented," and he cautioned against oversimplifying the conflict.

In an interview published Tuesday in the Jesuit publication "La Civilta' Cattolica," the pope said that in Russia's war on Ukraine, "there are no metaphysical good guys and bad guys, in an abstract sense."

He said that months before the war, a head of state warned him that NATO was "barking at the gates of Russia," and that Russia would not tolerate it, which could lead to war.

The leader, who Francis did not identify, "was able to read the signs of what was taking place," the pontiff said...

Jan. 6 committee will not make any criminal referrals, chairman says

Source: NBC News

The chair of the House committee investigating the Capitol riot said Monday night that the panel will not make any criminal referrals, even though its leaders have previously hinted at the possibility of doing so.

"Our job is to look at the facts and circumstances around January 6 — what caused it — and make recommendations after that," Chair Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., told reporters as he left the House chamber after the second day of public hearings by the panel.

When pressed on the matter and whether the committee had ruled out the possibility of referring criminal charges, particularly for former President Donald Trump, Thompson replied: "We don’t have authority."

McConnell says House's Supreme Court security bill can't pass Senate

Source: The Hill

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) warned late Monday afternoon that a House bill to provide protection to Supreme Court justices and their staffs will not pass the Senate, ratcheting up a standoff with Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

McConnell and Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), who drafted a Senate bill to implement new protections only for Supreme Court justices, accused House Democrats of trying to stall the measure...

“The version of the Supreme Court security bill that apparently they’re going to try to pass on suspension tonight is not going to pass the Senate,” he said, referring to the House calendar for passing legislation quickly with two-thirds support.

“The security issue is related to Supreme Court justices, not nameless staff that no one knows,” he added...

AOC Touts Blocking Supreme Court Security Bill After Kavanaugh Threat

Source: Newsweek

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez touted her efforts to block the passage legislation aimed at increasing police protection for Supreme Court justices and their families on Thursday and cited stalled efforts at passing new gun control laws.

Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat who represents New York's 14th district, shared a video to her Instagram Stories purporting to show her rushing to the floor of the House of Representatives in order to object to unanimous consent for legislation...

"I wake up this morning and I start to hear murmurs that there is going to be an attempt to pass the Supreme Court Supplemental Protection Bill the day after gun safety legislation for schools and kids and people is stalled," she said.

"Oh, so we can pass protections for us and here easily, right? But we can't pass protections for everyday people? I think not."...

Sanders, Warren propose bill to extend Social Security's solvency for 75 years, increase benefits ..

Source: CNBC

Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., introduced a new bill on Thursday that aims to extend Social Security’s solvency for 75 years by raising taxes on the wealthy, while making benefits more generous.

The proposal, called the Social Security Expansion Act, would expand benefits for current and new beneficiaries by $200 per month, or $2,400 per year, and would make the monthly checks more generous in other ways.

To do that, and improve the program’s solvency at the same time, the plan also calls for raising taxes on high-earning households...

Here's why the new Nancy Reagan stamp prompted backlash from the LGBTQ+ community

Members of the LGBTQ+ community are calling a new stamp featuring former first lady Nancy Reagan a "slap in the face," as it was unveiled at the beginning of Pride month and because of the Reagan administration's role in the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.

"I think it just brings up just this overwhelming, underlying grief that a lot of us have been having," said Sarah Epperson, a queer artist and illustrator who focuses on social justice issues and politics. "Not only did we lose an entire generation of our elders through the AIDS crisis in the '80s — you know, stories that we'll never have, people that we'll never have. ... But also we lost so, so many people. There would have been so many more of us had we not lost so many of them."...

The silence of Nancy Reagan and President Ronald Reagan on HIV/AIDS lasted for several years, with the president waiting until 1985 to directly address the issue while answering a reporter's question. It would be two more years until he made his first major address on the health issue in 1987.

Brandon Cuicchi, an organizer with ACT UP, the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, said Ronald Reagan's prolonged silence became a legacy of negligence...

Russia pushes Ukrainian forces to outskirts of key eastern city

Source: Reuters

Ukrainian forces pulled back to the outskirts of the eastern city of Sievierodonetsk on Wednesday in the face of a fierce Russian assault, the regional governor said, another big swing in momentum in one of the bloodiest battles of the war.

Russia has concentrated its troops and firepower on the small industrial city in recent weeks to secure the surrounding province on behalf of separatist proxies. Ukraine has vowed to fight there for as long as possible, saying the battle could help shape the war's course...

Horn of Africa braces for 'explosion of child deaths' as hunger crisis deepens

An “explosion of child deaths” is likely and imminent in the Horn of Africa unless the international community takes immediate action to prevent a new hunger disaster, UN humanitarians warned on Tuesday.

The alert follows four successive seasons of failed rains in the east African region – a situation not seen in at least 40 years – which have left 386,000 children in acute need of lifesaving treatment for severe malnutrition in Somalia alone.

To illustrate continuing deep concern about emergency levels of malnutrition in Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa, UN Children’s Fund UNICEF reported meeting parents who had to bury their emaciated children by the roadside, as they trekked hundreds of kilometres to seek medical help...
