President Biden changing mind on student loan forgiveness 'is a tremendous victory,' Rep. Pressley

"..."All we know is that the President has expressed an openness to to cancel some debt... that in its in and of itself, is a tremendous victory," Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) told Yahoo Finance in an exclusive interview (video above), later adding: "Any relief that we can provide people in the midst of unprecedented economic hardship as we begin to round the corner and head into a recovery from this pandemic induced recession would make a difference."

Pressley, alongside Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) have repeatedly called on Biden to cancel $50,000 in student loan debt immediately via executive order on the premise that there is sufficient legal backing for the administration to do so.

"This is about the president keeping his word," Pressley stressed. "He has the authority, and I think he has a mandate from this electorate... this is about being responsive to the multi-generational, multiracial coalition, which decisively elected him."...

A Russian naval base is defended by dolphins

Russia's military is using specially trained dolphins to defend a critical naval base off Crimea, according to an analysis published by U.S. Naval Institute News.

Submarine analyst H I Sutton wrote this week for the online news and analysis outlet — which is editorially independent from the nonprofit USNI — that satellite imagery from Maxar Technologies shows two dolphin pens at the entrance to Sevastopol's harbor, the Russian navy's "most significant" naval base in the Black Sea. He said the pens were moved there in February, around the time that Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The Maxar News Bureau confirmed to NPR that it agrees with that analysis. The firm also provided new satellite images, taken on Friday and showing a closer view of dolphin pens in the water at the entrance to the bay...

So Marjorie Trailer Queen and Bill Donohue are tangling

"...Greene claimed that the Catholic Church was under satanic control during a recent interview with right-wing activist Michael Voris of the website Church Militant. After a clip of Greene's comments circulated online Wednesday, Catholic League President Bill Donohue argued that she had "slandered" Catholics and demanded that she apologize.

In a long statement shared on Twitter soon after, Greene quickly refused Donohue's demand for an apology, while issuing an apology demand of her own and accusing church leadership of satanic influence..."

More Ukrainians leaving Poland than arriving for first time since Russian invasion

"The number of people crossing from Poland into Ukraine has begun to exceed those travelling in the other direction for the first time since Russia’s invasion, after which Poland become the primary destination for those fleeing the war.

On Saturday, deputy interior minister Paweł Szefernaker noted that the previous two days had seen “fewer Ukrainians enter Poland than crossed to Ukraine”. That trend has since continued over Saturday and Sunday..."

Psaki bomb - heads up, Elon Musk

Speaker 2: (04:58)
Just a quick one on the breaking news, Twitter agreeing to let Elon Musk purchase, go through with this purchase. Do you have a response to that? And does the White House have any concern that this new agreement might have President Trump back on the platform?

Jen Psaki: (05:12)
Well, I’m not going to comment on a specific transaction. What I can tell you as a general matter, no matter who owns or runs Twitter, the President has long been concerned about the power of large social media platforms. The power they have over our everyday lives has long argued that tech platforms must be held accountable for the harms they cause. He’s been a strong supporter of fundamental reforms to achieve that goal, including reforms to Section 230, enacting antitrust reforms, requiring more transparency and more. And he’s encouraged that there’s bipartisan interest in Congress. In terms of what hypothetical policies might happen, I’m just not going to speak to that at this point in time.

Seems to me there may be some clean up of Musk's swamp as needed.

As Diplomacy Hopes Dim, U.S. Marshals Allies to Furnish Long-Term Military Aid to Ukraine

Vlad, take note - we are all in for the long haul

"The United States marshaled 40 allies on Tuesday to furnish Ukraine with long-term military aid in what could become a protracted battle against the Russian invasion, and Germany said it would send dozens of armored antiaircraft vehicles. It was a major policy shift for a country that had wavered over fear of provoking Russia.

The announcement by Germany, Europe’s biggest economy and one of Russia’s most important Western trading partners, was among many signals on Tuesday pointing to further escalation in the war and disappointment for diplomacy..."

'Roe is dead': Ohio and Kentucky abortion laws preview a future without it

"...But if Roe is still the law of the land – and it is – why are so many people in so many states behaving as if it’s gone?

Because activists on both sides believe it soon will be.

“This is the last few months of Roe,” said Tamarra Wieder, state director of Kentucky’s Planned Parenthood Alliance Advocates. “We fully anticipate it will fall.”

“Roe is dead,” said Janet Folger Porter, the activist who helped create Ohio’s “heartbeat bill,” which would ban abortion after detection of a fetal heartbeat. “It’s the best news no one knows.”

Those predictions come as the most conservative Supreme Court in generations considers whether to weaken or dismantle Roe v. Wade when it rules in June on a Mississippi law that bans abortions after 15 weeks..."

We are playing the long game in Ukraine, Vlad

“We want to see Russia weakened to the degree that it can’t do the kinds of things that it has done in invading Ukraine,” Austin said at the news conference. “So it has already lost a lot of military capability. And a lot of its troops, quite frankly. And we want to see them not have the capability to very quickly reproduce that capability.”

https://www.cnn.com/2022/04/25/politics/blinken-austin-kyiv-ukraine-zelensky-meeting/index.html

This will not just be a short term defeat. This conflict is weakening Russia and that will cripple their ability to try it again anytime soon.
