Daniels was nominated by President Bill Clinton on August 5, 1999 to a seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, vacated by Robert P. Patterson, Jr.. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on February 24, 2000, and received his commission on March 9, 2000.
