But this particular eagerness to deny and violate the students' right to privacy smells of conservative idiocy in particular, as does using overreaction to fear to justify oppression. Although nonthinkers of all types often sign on foolishly to bad ideas, these are both big conservative signatures.

Btw, you are badly confused about the difference between oppressive authoritarian government and the progressive government safety net that serves the people -- what conservatives call the "nanny state;" and yes we do still have some conservatives in the Democratic Party, but I'm surprised that someone here would be not just using that term but not even understanding what it means.
