The tired old history fan in me is pretty sure that since April, there have already been deaths among the separated children, especially among the younger ones - the infants and toddlers - who had already gone through a long and stressful journey and were in bad shape, physically or mentally, to begin with.
Poor nutrition, sanitation, and the exposure to foreign diseases, especially since they've been travelling for months across different environments - and in the mid-spring when everything is "blooming" (specifically bacteria and fungi) can cause catastrophic physical failure.
Babies and toddlers without their parents or a trusted caretaker in such a situation can easily just shut down. And that is usually fatal.
