Examples (unfortunately) abound in those who would persecute LGBT community, women, POC, among those who are actually "members" of those communities, even "secretly".

Beyond that? I guess the psychiatric community needs to weigh in, but I'm guessing a tremendous sense of insecurity, and overwhelming need to be "accepted" by the larger "group" with power.
