(37,648 posts)24. I know. But history is full of this. People in power, even dying for it.
I wonder about all the people who insisted on claiming, or hanging onto, a royal crown, even to the point of execution, when they could leave and live in comfort with their wealth. Like King Henry VIII's first wife, Catharine, whom he wanted to divorce. She would not allow it, when she could have retired somewhere with a mansion, money, servants...he'd offered her that. Instead, she fought it, and ended up with a lot less (although she was provided for). Mary Queen of Scots kept plotting to become Queen of England, which she claimed as a birthright...when she was Queen of Scotland, with a castle, money, and all the rest. She ended up a prisoner for years, and finally beheaded. Go figure.

OP
So he would decide to keep his seat rather than do the right thing. Power hungry?

He's right. The pressure on them from the base AND the party AND the Senators is immense....

Lust for power wins over doing the right thing. What good is power? To do evil?

Which is a foreshadowing of Collins and Murkowski voting to confirm regardless of how sham-y

So Kavanaugh will be confirmed and this was a pointless exercise. Surprise surprise.

That he frames it as "reaching across the aisle" is more than a little disturbing.
