(15,532 posts)I am not poor. I was financially comfortable my entire adult life and now consider myself to be comfortable in my senior years (so far). However, I grew up poor and I can attest to the statement "It hurts to be poor." You never forget what it feels like to be poor.
And let's face it. It's still a fact that single women are more likely to live in poverty when they are older. The jobs they held in their earning years could very well have been important jobs, but the pay was nowhere near a living wage. I have a sister who was always single. She has two degrees. She was a social worker, a librarian and served her country in a war zone. She's now 78. Her Social Security check is less than $600 a month. She lives in HUD housing, no car, her landline/utilities and internet are subsidized. HUD housing isn't always in the best neighborhoods. I challenge anyone to want to trade places with her.
Thank you, Jodie for what you do for others.
