For starters, the message would not be sent that Trump (or god forbid whatever WORSE comes next from the GOP sludge) can live beyond the law.

The office of the President is stained beyond cleaning by Trump to begin with, but failing to bring impeachment HEARINGS - not necessarily ARTICLES OF - sends the message to the Trump fans and low information voters that two things are "true":

1) Trump is exonerated of wrong doing...no matter what sentient beings KNOW and certainly not what people who have bothered to READ the Mueller Report in full. The drone class of mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging, Trump-loving rubes will forever BELIEVE that Trump was 100% innocent. It will be an unshakable tenet of their existence forever.

2) Trump will assume (correctly) that Democratic leadership is just as craven and power hungry as he is...right or wrong, this assumption will be used to tar and feather the party in the run up to 2020 (accusations of 'partisan witch hunt' and 'refusing to accept my victory' will become the coin of the realm so to speak).

Failure to START impeachment inquiry is a dereliction of duty to the Constitution and to the people of the United States, whose government has been usurped and whose self-rule is being stolen.

The case against Trump and his actions is 100X stronger than the charges the GOP brought up on Clinton, yet because of the inaction for the last 6 months, the public BELIEVES that the case against Trump is fabricated and weak or nonexistent. If for no other reason than to set the record straight and FORCE the GOP senate to defend the Tangerine Menace loudly and publicly in an election year, impeachment inquiry MUST be brought and should be brought ASAP.

Playing coy and politics and trying to do the calculus of how this MIGHT effect the 2020 results is fool's gold and plays as weakness, not strength and ultimately tars and feathers the Democratic Party as being the same - ineffectual, cowardly and weak in the face of doing what MUST be done.

Call for impeachment inquiry to begin or resign and get a job doing stock analysis for risk averse hedge funds...
