In reply to the discussion: Republicans argue that Democrats have been trying to impeach Donald Trump since Day One [View all]chriscan64
(1,789 posts)Yes, some Democrats were calling for impeachment before the Ukraine episode. This is a fact that exists but has no bearing on his innocence or guilt. Even if you take the position for the sake of argument that he did nothing close to impeachable conduct before Ukraine and that some Democrats were just "out to get him", HE STILL DID UKRAINE! His actions and words, not made up or some sort of railroading.
I am always amazed at the unspoken parts of what the republicans say. Whenever they talk about the desire to impeach from early on or the process, there is a huge "... and therefore he is innocent" implied at the end of it. It gives an escape route for their base voters who are already predisposed to think he is innocent but can't work out exactly how in the face of the evidence. Problem is, in the world of reality and logic there is no path to proof of his innocence, there is no escape. The rank and file would have to leave their critical thinking behind to get to the fantasy world that they prefer. This tactic by the republicans is not new, it is the same one they usually use to explain the benefits of tax cuts for the rich. There was always the "... and then the tax savings will be used to create jobs" implication. You ever notice that "create jobs" and "invest in the economy" are not in the tax cut bills? The rich just get the money.
