For anyone who doesn't know, Benghazi wasn't a consulate. I don't think there was an American consulate at that time, just the embassy in Tripoli. The property in Benghazi was a few, virtually defenseless and empty buildings with an easily scaled wall around them, far from help in the middle of a civil war with over 5000 armed militia groups inside Libya alone. The ambassador's tiny inspection party made the fatal mistake of staying too long in one place outside Tripoli.
