It's not "your body" that develops resistance to antibiotics. It's bacteria. Antibiotics attack bacteria, not your own cells. That's the whole point of them. And while they shouldn't be used if there isn't a need, it's quite possible he did have a bacterial infection - they can accompany viral ones - and if you're as bad as he said, then it's worth going with the medical diagnosis. Take the whole course, as prescribed (stopping the moment you start to feel better, so that you can hoard the rest, is one way you end up favouring the slightly stronger bacteria).
