10. What's the jury service connection?

And to all who avoid jury duty, what the fuck is wrong with you? Why are you not willing to fulfill a basic service of citizenship? I have never understood the eagerness of most people to avoid jury duty. And it's not even that common. I'm 71 years old, and even though I've been a registered voter for some 50 years (and voter rolls are the most common way of selecting jurors) I've been called to jury duty once and only once in all these years. Alas, I wasn't able to serve and was dismissed because in about two days a family vacation was coming up, airplane tickets and hotels already paid for, so I was dismissed. Sigh.

I used to know a couple of people, she was a college professor, he a free-lance journalist, who chose not to register to vote for fear they'd be called to jury duty. I'm only sorry I never confronted them on that.

So, do jury duty. It's a fundamental part of being a citizen.
