If he decides to wear a mask, nothing he said previously will matter. Wearing a mask will suddenly the biggest macho thing ever. He won't even acknowledge that he ever said anything about masks before. He won't say, "I changed my mind," but "I never said that."

And his open-mouthed fans will nod and put on a mask and say he's god.
