Japan didn't close or lockdown anything like what America did, but their cases and deaths are miniscule by comparison to the US, and also compared to other no-lockdown countries like Sweden.

Why? Maybe because their mask-wearing rate was through the roof.

There are studies/papers out there which show that if 80% of Americans wore masks outside the home, the transmission rate would plummet even without an accompanying lockdown.
