after a point, water doesn't help much and will go right through you, and that can be dangerous. The electrolytes in the melons/cucumbers bring down your body temperature and help keep it down. They will help you keep from getting over heated and help if you do get overheated. I have used them for heat exhaustion when I lived in the desert, saved me from heat stroke. And now that Montana gets unbelievable heat, I rely on them in summer here too.
So they work before, during or after an overheating event as well as fevers when you are ill.
Hope the heat doesn't stick around long.
