The books will probably not affect his base. However, his base is not large enough to re-elect him. His poll numbers have stayed basically the same for 3 and-a-half years. He is not gaining voters.

The hope is the revelations of these books (along with every other horrible thing) will bring voters to the polls to get rid of him.
