Frankly, we've seen plenty of cases in world history where the "balance" was achieved by one side wiping the other out, or forcing them to knuckle under and accept being ruled. It happens over and over, far more often than we see some sort of amicable trade-off. Even the "thesis/antithesis/synthesis" theory of human history, originated by Hegel and admired by Marx, still usually meant that the synthesis was achieved by one of the two sides first defeating the other by force (see the Russian Revolution).
