Trump was pretty much doomed from the start because he didn't understand that while Congress passes laws, many of the ones that do pass are initiated as policy by the White House first. This is actually a failing that comes from his lack of business acumen as much as anything. Trump has never really had to lead a company before. In most cases, he would decide to do something, figure out a way to get someone else to fund it, then would turn it over to someone else to actually manage. That's true of many salespeople in general - they typically look for someone who's already in the market to buy something, would facilitate the deal, then would step out of the equation, meaning that the actual process of designing, building, and maintaining is already on someone else's plate.

Trump squandered the trifecta, burning political capital on meaningless projects such as the Wall, and reversing as much of the Obama legacy as he could, not believed he thought it was bad policy, but because it was a black man's achievement. He ended up wasting too much time in his first two years, then found his hand forced when the midterm elections hit. He could have taken that as an opportunity to compromise, and to reach out to more than just his electoral base. He didn't. What will ultimately doom him is that could divide, but he couldn't unite.
