(10,828 posts)Then we need to remember that in the glory days of the KKK, it wasn't just the yahoos, the good ole boys and/or redneck peckers involved in the savagery and hatred. The professional class participated as well: doctors, lawyers, judges, law enforcement, often holding leadership positions, funding the movement, sometimes participating (as long as they couldn't be identified).
I'd like to think that ridiculous sheriff, betraying his oath, indicating that citizens' arrests are lawful, is a one-off. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think there's anything in the law that allows kidnapping, kangaroo courts and possible execution of public officials we disagree with. However, I'm guessing there are more sympathizers hiding in the 'bad apple' grove. They need to be rooted out, exposed and charged when crimes are committed. We need to do what President Grant did and bear down hard on anyone and everyone who would take the law into their own hands.
Vigilantes are not heroes. They're criminals.
I'm anticipating a lot of ugliness between the election and inauguration, after which the boom needs to come down hard on these domestic terrorists regardless of who they are or what titles they may or may not hold. And we need a real live Justice Department working the problem along with our other enforcement agencies.
If the Republicans howl, start the whole whataboutism screech? We ignore them and get the job done.
Because enough is enough!
