This sentence makes it seem the virus actively does this for some reason, "blocking a protein that enables the virus to turn the immune system against healthy cells". I don't know why it would benefit a virus to turn the immune system against healthy cells when the virus itself needs those healthy cells to reproduce.

Maybe it's how it's worded... Would, "blocking a protein in the virus that causes the immune system to attack healthy cells" be better?

I know that the virus is not sentient and it's actions are only what occurs due to the 'program' contained in it's RNA. It's actions are really sort of a random shotgun of events that somehow ultimately produces more of the virus. It has developed over time through a colossal trial and error until some sort of a sustainable and self-replicating pattern has come about which is capable of overwhelming the immune system.

get a study/trial started......... Takket Oct 2020 #1

I think it's just a random and destructive thing the virus does in going about being a virus. Hugin Oct 2020 #9
