(25,428 posts)The field was too large for too long. It allowed Trump to hang around as the others dropped out one-by-one. Had the race been between Trump and, say, Romney, from the start, Trump would have gotten thumped. It was also an extraordinarily weak field.
Republican voters love Trump because they don't really have any choice. They didn't love him in the primaries en masse until he gained momentum as others died off. They rallied behind him once he was the clear front-runner because the alternative was Hillary Clinton.
As an aside, Bernie Sanders was banking on a similar tactic in the Democratic primaries. His campaign felt that he could win with maybe 30% of the vote because the rest would be split several ways. Had Dems not rallied behind Biden starting in SC (and a bunch of candidates dropped out), it might have worked. Probably would have.
