When he realized the size of the mob and that he was hopelessly outnumbered, he put his billy club down to negotiate/buy time with that POS "leader." When that wasn't working, he decided to lead them upstairs to where he knew there'd be backup for him, a much larger area to avoid being boxed in and lessen the sense of power they felt in their mobbed up frenzy.
