4. I have a different theory about this.

In Sidney Zion's autobiography of Roy Cohn,* Cohn's MO was not to take money for legal services rendered (or for "fixing" a situation). Instead, he collected a "marker," that is, an exchange of favors. The client would be connected to banks or politics or government, etc. and would be expected to pay back Cohn's marker when asked (at any time) for a value that exceeded the value of services rendered. That's why Cohn was so "well connected."

Trump obviously was aware of this type of barter system and has tried to institute it on past legal counsel -- but, as we all know, Trump never reciprocated with the markers, that is, no money and no return favor(s).

You can't believe for a moment that Trump ever paid a retainer for any attorney, can you? (And Trump is a poster child of why attorneys make you put up $7,500 and more for a retainer before the first phonecall. They don't have insurance that they'll get their money. BTW, lawyers and doctors are the last professions generally paid according to statistics.)
