3. It illustrates the point that a Civil War now would be nothing like the old one

If the US were to devolve into Civil War now, it wouldn't be over territories or states or dividing lines. A new Civil War would be fought in every state, every city, town, suburb, and neighborhood. Even families would be fighting each other, and the partisan loyalties would become completely arbitrary. The entire thing is unthinkable.
