3. The whole planet is that way

We have our own particular ills in the US, and perhaps a few countries get the balance of good and bad better than we do, but every society is fucked up in some way, and some worse than ours.

This is not to say we shouldn't always be striving to make things better. We should. And we have a right to be angry at greed and senseless stupidity and violence. But I don't see the US as particularly more or less hopeless than humanity as a whole.

That isn't high praise, of course.
