... it originally was used to describe union coal miners in WVA who were fighting for good wages and safe working conditions and the right to paid in cash and not tokens good only at the company store. They wore red bandanas to be able to identify themselves in battle with the Pinkertons, National Guard, company thugs who were shooting to kill miners and their wives and children and evict them from their homes.
