(146,282 posts)One thing about being a frequent DU poster and becoming recognized, though, is that a lot of other DUers recognize your screen name. That's a good thing, but it can also be a bad thing.
DU, like every other discussion forum on the Internet has multiple factions of posters and readers. The more you post, the more you are remembered for your posts and the more you either entertain or antagonize various of those factions.
If, like many frequent posters, you sometimes post controversial things, you will be remembered even more. Again, that's good and bad at the same time. The more you are remembered, the more often some will remember you for some post(s) you made years ago that infuriated them. In fact, some will remember you only for a few old posts and will call those up in their minds and will respond as though the same old discussion is still current.
It's not just DU. It's every discussion forum ever that has participants who have been active for years as frequent posters. In some cases, a disgruntled poster will even maintain lists of links to those old posts that pissed them off, for quick reference.
It's an odd thing, really. But, if you're going to be a frequent poster who sometimes posts controversially, it's going to happen. It's best just to ignore those disgruntled members who only pop into your threads to make some arcane reference to a post you made years ago. It's inevitable, and will happen to anyone who posts frequently about hot-button issues.
You just have to roll with it. Most others in such threads don't even recognize the sly references. You just have to ignore them.
