43. ALL prisons, not just private, should have intense scrutiny by members of the public.

Anyone like myself who has worked with people in prison knows the human misery suffered by many, including neglect of health care, especially when public prisons farm out health care and food service. In addition, rehabilitation in the USA is mostly a cruel joke.

Abuse of human rights behind the bars is common around the world. "Out-of-sight/out-of-mind" is the driving principle that allows abuse. Private jails and prisons are even further away from public scrutiny.

If the the public wants people imprisoned for breaking laws then we must accept full responsibility for insuring humane treatment for all those we remove from our society.
