… as it sometimes seems. I don’t think it was even in 1860, but our perception is that it was.

A lot of decent people would suffer immensely it we did something like you’re suggesting. Even in Alabama (where I live), 850k people
voted for Biden/Harris out of 2.3m voters. Still an easy win for Тяцмр, yet still a pretty significant number of Dems present and accounted for.

The tough answer to this dilemma is to provide people with good government. After The New Deal, Democrats enjoyed 50 years of dominance in Congress. That was because those progressive policies were favored by people, and were credited to Democrats.

I understand that there were social changes in the 60s and 70s that drove Southern Dems and evangelicals into the arms of the authoritarian GOP - and that has to be addressed, but the basic principle of offering good - and visible - governance still stands as the best way to win support.

This is why I’m so pissed at some Democratic conservatives. They have clearly forgotten that, or have been induced to ignore it. It’s worrisome because I don’t think we will have relatively sound elections for too many more cycles. Time really is running out.
