(265 posts)Sometimes after divorce the ex-spouses get along better than they did while still unhappily yoked together. I see us as almost two countries already, with a kind of Western-hemisphere Danish social democracy linked in disharmony to a 1890's wild west territory. Take any problem, and half of us want to establish a study commission to develop a thoughtful policy solution, and the other half want to form a posse, "Freedom!" "Someone get a rope!" So it's not clear how we would live post-divorce. There may be ongoing tension, or maybe people will feel a lot calmer because their attempts to establish their version of the good society are not always automatically blocked by half of America. Being a social democratic type, I think it would be useful to establish a federal commission to review how other countries have managed their divorces and come up with a plan that would maximize the likelihood of our proceeding with peace and civility.
