both internally and externally. They then became essentially dependent fully on the US for protection. Since the Cold War ended, few of the European countries have really armed up, expecting that interaction and investment would prevent Russia from being, well, Russia. Bad decision in hindsight, but we are where we are now, at least they are finally stepping up, even though it's taken a lot of pressure.
