Teaching is a profession, and as such it should be higher paying and deserving of respect. Many teachers have master’s degrees and often educational hours beyond a masters. In addition, most of them take advantage of professional development seminars and opportunities to learn new skills or knowledge at teachers’ conventions.

Republican treat teachers like people they’re hired to take the trash out, yelling at them, accusing them of teaching things they aren’t teaching, forcing them to remove books from their curriculum, and demanding that they say only what Republican parents and legislators want them to say.

Certainly not all teachers are perfect, but in many areas it’s a tough job, especially for those teachers who work in schools that are in poor neighborhoods where they’re constantly scrounging for classroom supplies.

Republicans are definitely working to kill the whole concept of public schools, to be replaced by for-profit charter schools and white evangelical schools funded by taxpayers. The crazy thing is that this hurts their most faithful voters—rural Republicans, most of whom rely on public schools and do not want to see them turned into for-profit or religious schools.
