7. I just started a new job in hospital between Ft Lauderdale and Miami. I volunteered to work

the "hurricane" shift, not before or after. My thinking was what better place to ride out the storm? Food, water, shelter.. Looking out the 3rd floor window at 2 am did not look too bad but the aftermath told a different story.
Being a ham radio operator I also volunteered to man the radios incase the phone system went down. All the hospitals had ham radios just in case.
The most harrowing part was listening to the fire rescue transmissions from Homestead. The rescue and fire fighters were going nuts down there. Some pretty gruesome stuff happened.
Andrew I think was a direct hit in Homestead. It was suppose to hit Miami but took a jog to the left and hit Homestead. I have been gunshy of hurricanes ever since and that was in 1992! The pucker factor goes up when I hear about a hurricane coming close... YMMV
