He retired as CWO from the Air Force and then worked for the state for 20+ more years and he just would never let whatever rank or privilege he had trump fair play.

When I first moved here (almost 30 years ago) to go to school and live with grandma and grandpa they decided it was a PITA to drive me around so we looked around for a cheap car so I could get to school and work. we found a zippy 71 Firebird for 1500 bucks and went to look at it. It was worth the money so he paid the man (private seller) and asked for a hand written receipt so we could go get the tags and the guy offered to write down less than the 1500 so the taxes would be less. He never even batted an eye and just said "No thank you - we paid 1500 dollars and that's what we are telling the state." I was pretty young then but that has stayed with me all these years because that was just one example of how a man should act.

He doesn't make a big deal out of stuff like that. He never pontificates or lectures and rarely offers advice except when it's asked of him. He just quietly lives his life as fairly and honestly as he can and lets that speak for him. To me, that is the definition of actions speaking louder than words and Grandpa is the personification of it.
