3. As far as I know, you only get taxed when you sell

I had inherited a bunch of Apple stock, and the broker sold some of it. I never owed tax on it before, but when they sold it, I owed an arm and a leg. I went years not owing anything on owning the stock, it was only when thery sold it that I owed.
