Still, we aren't as bad as some south American countries.

I think it was Ecuador where before marriage, you were required to attend religious counciling sessions with a priest. It didn't matter what religion you were. I'm sure divorce was equally screwed up.

And we don't yet have a religious tax, like a school tax, that some countries have. Though I'm sure that's on some zealots radar.

All in all, the separation of church and state really did protect both. Unfortunately those walls are crumbling. And both are suffering the decay.
