(26,549 posts)They did an experiment where one person abused a plant, such as burning parts, ripping parts off, yelling at it and so on.
Another person treated the plant nicely - spoke nicely, gave the plant water and fertilizer.
They did this to measure the effects of the abuse on the plant. But an odd thing happened - the plant started reacting to the "evil" person before they interacted with the plant. In fact, it started preparing for damage even when the "evil" person just stood next to the plant and did nothing.
That pretty clearly demonstrates that the plant is doing much more than just reacting to stimuli. The plant was reacting without any known method of stimuli.
We're finding the concept of "consciousness" is trickier than we thought. Just like we used to think only humans and chimps made tools...until we found a lot of other animals making tools.
