5. It's not just the joke, of course. It's the context.

Had this buffoon made this "joke" outside of an official event for a presidential candidate that everyone already thinks is a racist, it wouldn't have had the same impact.

The context is just as important as the content of the joke, if not more so. The "comedian" is a surrogate of the campaign, performing at a campaign event. Trump can run from it or wave it off, but that doesn't change what was said and in what context. His campaign is responsible for it.

You (literally) bought it, Trump. Own it.
