He shook everyone's hand who was there and thanked them. My husband retold the story with pride for 30 years. Not everyone gets to shake the hand of a man as good as Carter.
I helped mostly with food, "gofer" duty and clean up since I am not very handy. He liked my pickled peaches and asked for the recipe with my address. I found something to write it on. A year later I got a note from Mary Prince with a picture of dozens of mason jars full of peaches on the kitchen counter and the President sitting there eating the few that not fit in jars right out of the pot warm.
He was the same generation of my parents. I have a special love for President and Mrs Carter. They were the best people.
