the first President that I voted for who won.
I was too young to vote for JFK and Lyndon Johnson. I was abroad in 1968 and, having never voted for President before, had no way to vote at that time, but would have voted for Hubert Humphrey. I voted for George McGovern in 1972 and for Jimmy Carter in 1976 in person and by absentee ballot in 1980.
I was abroad when I heard that Ronald Reagan had won in 1980 and realized - even at the time - that his election would make a seismic difference in US politics. I just didn't realize at the time how bad things would ultimately get.
How different America would be now if Jimmy Carter had won in 1980! I can only believe that we would be a better nation.
