(8,469 posts)Did it influence the results? No question. Is it illegal? When done by a foreign government, it may be. The problem is it is very hard to prove and prosecute as the 2016 election showed since a lot of the influence is designed to be subliminal (disinformation & conspiracy theories posted on social media). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_electoral_intervention . But note, Russia (along with many other countries) has been engaged in trying to interfere and influence elections, particularly throughout Europe, for decades. And make no mistake, the US has been engaged in doing this in other countries as well. What Musk is doing in Europe now is underhanded and unethical and maybe even illegal at some levels, but he is not "rigging" elections, just trying to ensure the results are to his liking. It needs to be called out when it happens which is why Macron is speaking out but it is very hard to prevent altogether.
