Showing Original Post only (View all)Here are a few great reasons to participate in tomorrow's boycott. [View all]
First, here are complaints I am seeing and reasons why people are not going to participate. They say: It's not going to put anyone out of business. It isn't a real reduction in spending because people are buying more the day before and the day after. It's too short term to make any difference. Oh, and there's one post going around that says we should plant a garden instead, which, OK sure. But here are the things the boycott will do, things the boycott is meant to do, if a lot of us participate:
1. Oligarchs are the force behind the Mump administration. Oligarchs get their wealth and power from our numbers, our buying power. The boycott is a way for us to show them WE can take those numbers, that buying power away from the oligarchs if we choose to. It is a way to show them they abuse us at their own peril.
2. It is an act of solidarity. It shows us that we can work together. We are not alone. We are a force when we unite. It is a thing we can all do, and we should all do if only to be there for each other.
3. It's a beginning. Perhaps it will show some of us that we don't need to be buying from the companies and people trying to trample us. Perhaps it will be the first of a series of boycotts that DO affect the bottom line of those companies and people trying to trample us. Perhaps it will whet our appetite to flex our civic muscles harder.
4. Finally, it's a way to protect our own psyches. I don't want to participate in the society being forced upon us. I won't buy anything tomorrow, but my plan - which is going well so far - is to only buy food, fuel and emergencies during the Mump administration. It makes me feel better. It makes me feel like I am less complicit in what they are doing.
There are many here who are posting that the boycott will do no good. If you feel that way, don't participate. But stop trying to discourage others from participating. If this thing is big, it will do a LOT of good. And in a lot more ways than you might be expecting.
Please post if you are boycotting for other reasons, or see other benefits that I haven't listed.

I already cut the cord, but if you mean no streaming service - I'll continue to watch Ms. Maddow.

Me too. I had a gift certificate and bought some orthotics with it, and felt a little guilty.

That's an important point. Our politicians are afraid of MAGA's threats of violence.

I will only spend money at small local businesses that oppose the Trump regime.

It's the easiest protest you'll ever do. And you can still shop at small businesses with cash.

And I think the more enthusiastic we participants are about it, the more successful the next one will be.

Moving your dinner out to another day would be a good way to support the boycott.
