Fundamentalist religions actively discourage critical thinking. I've often put it this way: One of their primary goals is to destroy your BS detector. That is something that can take a very long time to fix. What drove me leftward in my 30s was seeing that the right wing was less rigorous about making sure they were factual in their reporting than people who leaned left were. In the 20 years since then, the right has gotten much, much worse. They really don't care if anything they are saying is supported by hard evidence any more. Whatever sounds like it should be true to them is true to them. The left has also gotten worse, but the right has gone completely bonkers.
