The story goes like this - the merchant decided to sell his store and travel the country. He placed his valuables in a sack and began his journey. As the months went by he felt the sack with all his possessions was becoming a burden. He could never leave anywhere for fear of losing it. One day while he was napping in the woods, a monk stole the sack, took a shortcut across the mountain, waited for the merchant to arrive, and then left the sack on the path to be found. Needless to say, when the merchant woke he was horrified. Now, having it back he was delighted. In this short trip nothing had changed. The merchant (believed he) was by himself the entire time.
