Boy were we wrong. In the pouring rain protesters lined the street on the main drag through this small community as far as the eye could see.
It's a hard day for my wife and I, but it was uplifting to see the long string of people, stretching perhaps for miles, standing in the heavy downpours, waving at the cars and even big trucks honking in appreciation. We only got the finger a few times, and splashed by people driving close to the curbs to spray us with runoff, but overall everyone here was in for the good.
I feel a little better.
I see other people are seeing the same thing all around the country.
Update: It's done. We had a very compassionate vet, who let us know that her vital signs were fading and it was time, and left the decision - which we'd already made - to us. It was clear she wouldn't have made it through the night. We were with her at the end. I did cry. I didn't think I would, but I did.
Thanks to all here for the sympathy and advice.
