First you said "What is taking place is not reversible." Pretty flat and definitive.

Then you said, "...the damage will be irretreivable in the lifetime of anyone now living."

That is quite different. I disagree with your first comment, but there is a lot of wiggle room in your second comment.

Too picky? Maybe. I tend to object when I see absolutist comments. As bad as things may be right now, I still retain some optimism. I am often a cynic, but I just can't shake the optimism.
