Part of what stopped US atrocities in The Philippines was writers like Mark Twain calling them out. Part of what stopped the war in Viet Nam was the media showing the body bags every evening. Emmet Till's Mother had his body brought back to Chicago and had an open casket funeral and this was a huge step in the Civil Rights movement.
